The ghost cat

Bristled fur, giant paws, long tail, blue eyes...
The snow leopard’s a stunning beauty
When it comes to caring for them, we’ve failed
In our sacred caretaker duty.

Caring for nature is our call
Custodians of the earth
When these cats disappear from the world
Will we finally know their worth?

They’re called ghost cats for their camouflage
Their ability to blend in to hills
Instead they might be called ghost cats
Because so many of them have been killed.

Hunted for revenge because they kill to eat
Farmers' livestock disappear one by one
When an eye for an eye is required it seems
They’ll be near-extinct when we’re done.

We breed them in zoos when they should be
Far away on cold mountain ranges
Free to hunt, to breed, to live,
Not caged to be stared at by strangers.

So what to do for this ghost cat?
We can adopt them from afar
Supporting farmers to live with them,
To learn how precious they are.

Grey, white, and black, these big beautiful cats
Are ghostly, powerful, rare
A few thousand beauties left in the world
Let’s act now while they’re still there.
