The beauty of a handwritten letter

Today I had the joy of receiving something I hadn’t in a long, long time — a handwritten letter.

It came from one of my oldest and dearest friends. In it, she reminded me of the weekly letters we had written each other when we were teenagers — we would exchange them every weekend when we saw each other.

The letter moved me to tears — tears of joy, of nostalgia, of longing for the simpler days before communication became electronic… and perhaps a little cold.

I know that I will make the time to write back.

Today’s gift brought to mind other letters I’ve written and received, especially to school friends. We promised we’d stay in touch…then our letters became less frequent.

What does handwritten correspondence mean to you? How long has it been since you’ve written or received a letter?

How would it feel to send a letter again? Maybe lockdown is the perfect time to find out.
